A New Career?

This week was a very exciting one. I landed a small part in a new movie being shot in Sydney starring the Australian cricket legend and all round nice guy, Brett Lee. I played the receptionist working at Cochlear - my implants on show in all their glory.

How on earth did this come about you ask? Well,a few scenes were shot on location at the Cochlear headquarters in Sydney. I've been a fan of Brett Lee's for years so when Cochlear asked if there were any cochlear people that wanted to be in the movie I couldn't put my hand up quick enough!!!

So 24 hours later I found myself in hair and make-up, on set, in Sydney and talking to a real life movie director (he was lovely by the way, Anupam Sharma).

IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!

The movie, titled unIndian comes out around March 2015 and if my scenes aren't cut I'll be the most excited person alive.

A little movie for Cochlear

Cochlear Limited asked me for a quick video to show the Cochlear shareholders at the 2014 AGM in Sydney, Australia. This is what I sent them:

Conversations

I asked my son today to turn the sound down on his gaming console. His reply? "Can't you just turn your ears off instead?". Well ……………… I suppose I could ……………….

They didn't photoshop my wrinkles out but Woman's Weekly would describe that as being "natural and embracing my age". Here is the link to my wrinkles: http://www.cochlear.com

WA Training Awards 2014

I didn't bring home a win from the WA Training Awards on Thursday night (I'll have to be happy with top four in the state) but it did give me a good excuse to dress up :)

A Broken Woman

My cochlear broke! On the weekend the part that holds the ear-hook to the processor broke off which meant I couldn't wear it on my ear. It still worked if I wore a headband but seriously, one cannot go around wearing a headband at all times. So I dashed off to my audi and she replaced my broken processor with a shiny new one!!! I'm a very happy little deaf/hearing girl :)

My new processor!

Happy Deaf Birthday to Me!

Today is a special day, my third deaf birthday. Three years from the day I went deaf. I will celebrate with the family by going out to dinner and having a bit of a reflection. Three years on I can honestly say that going deaf was one of the best things that has ever happened to me :)

The first support group meeting

What a lovely bunch of cochlear implant wearers (and family members) we are!!!

The very first meeting for the Career Cochlear Implant Support (CISS) group was last night and it went very well!!! The group members are a great bunch of energised people. We enjoyed a drink and a few snacks and even managed to play a few games (yes, we are a fun bunch). Thanks to the Ear Science Institute Australia for letting us use their beautiful rooms for our meeting.

A little boy's wish ......

My youngest son found a dandelion flower the other day so I told him to blow on it and make a wish. He did but as he blew he said his wish aloud, " I wish my mum wasn't deaf". I don't know if the wish was for me or for him, but I suspect it was for me.

Ear Science Institute Website

I've been hanging around the internet lately and my story pops up again on the Ear Science Institute Australia's website. You all know the story, even I'm getting bored with it, but a bit of publicity is good if it can help someone else.

Team Sports - I've done it!

Team sports present a minor problem for deaf with cochlear implant people. There is the worry of not hearing the whistle when you've done something wrong, not hearing your team mates calling you, and then there is the worry of the device itself. Mostly sweat getting into it or getting hit by the ball or being knocked off.

Despite these worries I started playing netball this morning and it went really well! I'm not saying I'm a great player (far from it) but my cochlear wasn't an issue. I tucked it into a head band and told my team I was deaf and that was it. I could hear the whistle OK and just asked anyone around me what was going on and they were great. Easy. Now I can tick team sports off the list - smile!

Three Month Review

I had my three month review yesterday with my amazing audi. She tested all sorts of things but the end result was to drastically reduce the stimulation rate on my auditory nerves. What does this mean? God knows, but what I did get was that the computer (which controls my implant settings) had set my nerve stimulation rate at 900. This isn't actually that high but it was causing my nerves to react negatively when they had sound passed through them (the constant "dong" sound). My rate is now set to 250, significantly less and wow, what a difference! No more nervous breakdowns for me! Well, not caused by over stimulated auditory nerves anyway.

The wind in your hair .......

I know you read this with a romantic sort of whimsy but alas that is not the case for me. Wind and cochlear implants DO NOT go together well. There are two little microphones on top of the processor that sits on the ear. These microphones are very sensitive so when the wind is blowing outside most of what I hear is, well..... wind. It sounds a bit like when a TV reporter is outside on a windy day and you can hear the wind blowing in the microphone. Only for me the wind sound is in the brain and makes it hard to listen to speech.
Yesterday was an example. I'm down at the beach, windy day, with my son and another child from his school walks up and starts talking to me, telling me a story. I had no idea what he was talking about and there is no point saying pardon over and over again as I was never going to understand him with the wind blowing in my cochlear. So I just looked interested, smiled, and said "oh that's cool". Afterwards I asked my son what he was talking about. This little boy was telling me how his mother ate chicken the night before and got such bad food poisoning that she had to go to hospital. Oops, maybe smiling and saying that's cool wasn't the right response. Luckily, kids are very forgiving with deaf adults :)

A little joke

A concerned husband went to a doctor to talk about his wife. He says to the doctor, "Doctor, I think my wife is deaf because she never hears me the first time and always asks me to repeat things." "Well," the doctor replied, "go home and tonight stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her. If she doesn't reply move about 5 feet closer and say it again. Keep doing this so that we'll get an idea about the severity of her deafness." Sure enough, the husband goes home and does exactly as instructed. He starts off standing about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she is chopping some vegetables and says, "Honey, what's for dinner?" He hears no response. He moves about 5 feet closer and asks again. No reply. He moves 5 feet closer. Still no reply. He gets fed up and moves right behind her, about an inch away, and asks loudly, "Honey, what's for dinner?" She replies, "For the fourth time, vegetable stew!

A few months have gone by with the second implant

After a few months with the second implant (in the ear that has been deaf for 40 years) things have taken an interesting turn. I've gone from having to "suffer" while wearing the second implant, to actually finding I need to wear it to get better sound. In fact today, I've worn it all day, that's a first. It was only two weeks ago that I couldn't stand wearing it for more than an hour. The biggest thing I'm finding is all the new noises. Things like a car engine starting next door, previously I've not heard that. Even the sound of my typing right now is so loud! Is this how hearing people hear all the time? With all this noise? I suspect it is just my brain feeling a little overwhelmed and it will settle down in time.

Two cochlear implants or one? At the movies.

It has occurred to me that I have only ever watched kids movies at the theatre since going deaf. Kids movies are easy to follow and after attempting to watch an adult movie the other day I realised that I wasn't really hearing as much as I thought I was. I went to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and tried listening to it with two ears, then one. Neither was very successful so I was a little disappointed. Oh well, back to the kids movies at the theatre and adults movies on DVD.

Cochlear Friendly Fashion

Yes, you read the title correctly. I have been searching for a fashionable hat (it's very sunny in Perth) that doesn't knock my magnet coil off whenever I put it on and I have now found the answer with this:

It's one of those caps without the top part, a tennis cap if you will. It works perfectly as the processor cord sits over the hat band, yay, sun protection is taken care of, yay, and it doesn't look too bad, double yay!
