I got it!!!

I GOT IT!!! I GOT IT!!! I finally got my Master of Education degree finished and I'm sooooo happy. That was seriously hard work. The units were easy enough but doing the masters through research was one of the hardest things I've ever done. It's a crazy thought but in two years I'll be starting my PhD. Only because I think Dr Jane has a nice ring to it :)

A few photos from the red carpet

HAVE to share this!

Remember that movie I was in? No? Clearly I didn't talk about it enough ...........

Well it's been released in Australia! And guess who was invited to the red carpet premiere? Check out this video I did for Cochlear Australia while I was there.

Four years ago in a land far away .....

......... a middle aged woman went deaf.

Yep, it's my deaf birthday! Usually I celebrate with a nice meal out but this year was a non-event as my children didn't feel that having two birthdays a year was fair and they refused to participate in my celebrations. So I had left-overs for dinner and sang myself "happy deaf birthday to you" and went to bed. And that's the end of the story.

The End

Still here!

Okay, so I'm actually still alive just really neglecting my blogging. I'm sorry.

Quick update:

The ears are good. I don't wear the second CI because it doesn't give me clear enough speech. Having said that I still intend on trying to get it working one day.

The movie unIndian in which I star (briefly ........ if they didn't cut my one scene .... 'star' might be pushing it) comes out October 15th 2015 - mark it in your calendar.

The cochlear support group that I run is going well and has lots of new members. Clearly there is a need for CI people to connect. We are half way between the Deaf community and the hearing community - sometimes identifying with others of the same deafness/hearingness is important.

Work is crazy - both jobs (lecturing and teaching), but I love what I do so I'll keep doing it deaf or not.

Still playing netball, still can't hear a thing, and still don't know what's going on but that has never stopped me before! I'm back at yoga again too - can't hear that either but it's slow enough to follow others.

My research on children with cochlear implants is going well and I hope to finish by October this year. I'll publish the results on this blog.........

............... and I promise to post more often!!!!!

I love it when things like this happen. As part of my job as a lecturer I visit students while they are on practicum. This involves the student working in a school or childcare centre for a set period of time where they are assessed for their skills.

So the other day I went to see one of my students in a childcare centre and while I was there one of the ladies who works there was chatting to my student and I saw she was wearing hearing aids. I asked her if she was deaf and she said yes then looked at me more closely and burst out "I know you, I was reading all about you online last night!"

Turns out she had been thhinking about getting cochlear implants and in her online research had found my story on the Ear Science Institute website. Naturally we chatted for ages about being deaf in a hearing family and how the cochlear works.

I'm wondering if that's how a celebrity feels? Being recognised in public all the time, once counts as all the time doesn't it?

Sorry for the Silence

Ok, I've been a little slack on the blog front. Life caught up with me and I had to have a little rest (except that I didn't but oh well).

So the latest in deaf/cochlear implant news is that I'm having a bit of trouble with the noise in my new work office. Each office has it's own air-conditioning unit and the one in my new office is very noisy. This drives me and my cochlear insane. Now I know you're suggesting that I turn the air-conditioning off, and I would do that, except there are some people in the office who feel the heat a bit more than I do so it stays on most of the day........... slowing driving me crazy with the constant buzzing (remember through a cochlear implant the sound is a bit electronic so buzzing is really annoying).

Finally I couldn't handle it anymore so I said something. Now don't get me wrong, my work team are great and we are working on a solution but at one point it was suggested that I just turn my ear off. Let's think about that for a minute. If I suggested the hot people take their shirt off isn't that the same thing? Why is it okay to ask me to remove my cochlear implant? How would people feel if they were asked to remove their glasses because it annoyed others, or how about a person in a wheelchair being asked to leave it outside so it doesn't take up too much room in the office? At first I wasn't offended when they asked me to turn my ear off ( I said no however) but the more I think about it the more I realise how rude it was. If it comes up again I'm going to tell them to take their shirt off and watch for the reaction.

Radio Interview on 6PR (Perth)

Christmas Eve 2014 I was interviewed on the Perth radio station 6PR (http://www.6pr.com.au) about my experiences of having cochlear implants.

The interview was 20 minutes in total but here is the first 10 minutes.
